Work on the Dh388 million first phase of the Ras Al Khor corridor, which involves construction of a third bridge, or the fourth crossing, over Dubai Creek is being continued in full swing. According to Badr Al Gergawi, Head of Roads Construction Section at Dubai Municipality’s Roads Department, the first phase includes construction of the 10-lane and non-open span Ras Al Khor Bridge, and the digging of a tunnel on the intersection of Al Rabat Road and Marrakesh Road. Works of the remaining three phases of the project are also scheduled to begin very soon and all works are expected to be completed by middle of 2007. The bridge, which is designed to ease traffic on Shaikh Zayed Road, Al Garhoud Bridge, Al Maktoum Bridge and the Shindagha Tunnel, will have five lanes in each direction, with the option of a sixth if the need arises. Studies done on traffic movement on either side show major work is also required on several adjoining interchanges. The expansion of Rabat Road to six lanes in either direction, three of which will be dedicated to the expressway while the remaining three would be meant for internal traffic; construction of an intersection at Al Rabat Road and Nad Al Hamr Road; expansion of the Nad Al Hamr Road to a five-lane highway towards the North and four-lane highway towards the South all the way to the Dubai International Airport Tunnel; and the construction of access road for the Dubai Festival City on the Al Rabat Road, constitute the second phase of the corridor project. The third and fourth phases cover a large area — from the First Interchange at Shaikh Zayed Road to the new bridge at Ras Al Khor. Works in these two phases include the development of areas around the Doha Road and the proposed Burj Dubai areas, the Dubai Financial and Business City, and the Humanitarian City, designs for which were approved after the completion of traffic studies of these vital projects. Other works in the final phase include the construction of an interchange to connect the Al Khail Road (the Back Road), Oud Metha Road and the Zabeel (2) area, and construction of roads to connect Shaikh Rashid Road and Riyadh Road to the Al Jaddaf area.

New 10-lane bridge over Dubai Creek taking shape To ease traffic on several of the city's main thoroughfares Dubai Municipality is building a new bridge over the creek. Once completed, Ras Al Khor Bridge will be the third bridge over the creek (the other two are Garhoud Bridge and Maktoum Bridge). Along with the bridge comes a huge junction I’m sure people in festival city will be very happy as this in within this project, maybe close to the festival shopping center.

Exit ramps off the 12-lane Ras Al Khor Bridge will directly access the 1,600-acre development's office, residential, retail, hospitality and entertainment areas. Similarly, filter lanes out of Dubai Festival City will provide access back onto the bridge. 'This project adds a whole new dynamic to Dubai Festival City as well as to the emirate itself,' said Omar Al Futtaim, CEO of the Al Futtaim Group, developers of Dubai Festival City. 'For tourism and commerce, the new bridge will be one of the most significant of recent additions to Dubai's superb road network. 'Aside from the anticipated exponential increases in vehicles crossing the Creek, there will be additional traffic generated by the new terminal at Dubai International Airport and by Dubai Festival City residents and visitors. 'Ease of vehicular access will be imperative to Dubai Festival City's businesses and residents and Dubai Municipality has shown tremendous foresight in planning direct access off the Ras Al Khor Bridge into the development.' Construction of the Ras Al Khor Bridge, 1.5km east of Al Garhoud Bridge, is now underway with completion due for the end of 2006. The bridge is part of one of the largest civil engineering projects in Dubai, dubbed the Ras Al Khor Project, and will involve a 15km corridor through to the first interchange of Sheikh Zayed Road.
